Tutoring elementary, high school, and college students since 2007
I have been tutoring for over 12 years and began my career in high school with children from inner-city schools. When I began college at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, I quickly took to tutoring when I realized I was helping classmates of mine in General Chemistry and a number of other subjects. Around 2011, I was hired by the Kaplan test prep company and received an elite score on their teaching index after my first two years of teaching. After graduating with my Psychology degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 2013, I moved back to Memphis and received my Biology degree from the University of Memphis in 2014. Then, in 2017, I received my master’s in Biology, and in 2019 finished my second master’s in Bioinformatics. I am now pursuing my Ph.D. in Biology in the field of computational psychiatry after being awarded a university R1 fellowship researching PTSD Biomarkers in Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.
However, my real qualifications are not my degrees. What makes a great tutor is their ability to empathize with their students and to allow them to believe that they are capable of doing well both as an individual and as a student. When I tutor my students, I’m not trying to get them to be great students; I’m trying to get them to be great people. Walking through math problems, assigning extra homework, and re-explaining complicated concepts is easy, but overcoming personal hurdles, finding a place where a student belongs, and allowing students to find themselves is the real challenge that makes me love my job. At Tutor Tactix, I’m not paid to tutor students; I’m paid to develop them into better versions of themselves.
